March 3, 2021 - Malaysia Airlines has suffered a data breach impacting its frequent flyer program, known as Enrich. What's unusual about the breach is that it occurred over a period of nine years.
Apparently, the breach took place as a result of issues with a third-party service provider to the airline. The data involved in the breach included full names, contact information (including email addresses), dates of birth, member numbers and tier levels. No payment, password or itinerary information was breached.
At present, it isn't known how many Americans are impacted by this breach but given the period of time that the beach occurred over, the number is probably fairly large. Anyone who has been a member of Enrich within the past nine years should be careful when opening email messages as SPAM and phishing are the two most likely outcomes given the types of data that was breached.
At present, there is no indication that the breach has resulted in any abuse of the data. Although password information was not included, the airline is suggesting that current Enrich members change their passwords as a precaution.
