Evaluating Privacy Software - Privacy Eraser PDF Print E-mail

November 30, 2022 - It has been quite some time since we've evaluated any privacy software. So we're going to start looking at the currently available options for Windows users. We're starting with a program called Privacy Eraser.

Privacy Eraser offers both a free and a pro version. The free version is surprisingly robust for basic privacy software. The pro version, which costs $20 a year, offers more features including the ability to free disk space is actually passed over and that any deleted files are completely unrecoverable. The software will do this to DoD standards or allow you to customize it to be even more thorough.

Once installed, Privacy Eraser offers the use the ability to scan their hard drive eliminate a large number of files that could be used to track them. This includes browser caches, cookies and temporary files. It also cleans up the computer's registry and deletes registry keys that are no longer being used. It also installs itself to the Windows right-click menu so that you can use it to safely and permanently erase files, including those in the recycle bin.

Unfortunately, Privacy Eraser doesn't appear to work well with cloud storage. This would include the obvious candidates such as OneDrive and Dropbox, but it also appears to include backup storage such as any network drives you may have installed.

The software also doesn't allow you to search for any erase files of specific types. So for instance, you can't do a search for all PDF files on your hard drive and safely erase them.

Overall though, Privacy Eraser is a pretty good option for anyone looking for a relatively simple program to use that will help them maintain their privacy. And even at the pro version cost of $20, it is one of the most economical choices available today.
