New Documentary Focuses on Debt in America PDF Print E-mail

A documentary film by director Danny Schechter is focusing a spotlight on credit card debt. "In Debt We Trust" provides a spellbinding story –one that will forever alter your view of debt and the multi-billion dollar consumer debt industry.

The film is not big budget. Even so, it appears to be edgy and focus on an area that ACCESS has been concerned with for some time. The overwhelming pressure placed on consumers due to debt.

Those who have seen it are giving the film good reviews. Schechter narrates the film himself, and according to a review at BuzzFlash, you will be "mad as hell" by the time he is done. The review goes on to say, "And the fact that both Republican and Democratic Party leaders generally do the bidding of the credit card companies -- as they did in the recent travesty of a bankruptcy bill that shafts consumers and enriches the financial industry -- comes through loud and clear in Schechter's documentary."

Schechter told the Sun-Sentinel "We live in a country where the credit and loan complex has become as powerful as the military industrial complex. There are 10 banks that dominate the credit card business. They basically operate with impunity."

At ACCESS, we have not reviewed the full film yet, but we intend to shortly. In the mean time, you can view the trailer by clicking on the "play" button, below. You can also visit the movie’s website at http://www.indebtwetrust.org.
